Dinged at Michigan-Ross

Got the official note today from Michigan Ross that I have been DINGed.
With this, my hopes now hinges on 2 schools - McCombs and XLRI....and maybe with some random luck, getting of the CMU Waitlist.

I have the XLRI interview on Monday...lets see what happens.

U r not alone. I too got ding from nyu this week. I'm feeling worthless, although i know I am not. I see people who have no interest in finance, getting admissions and majoring in finance, whereas I have an honest desire to learn it, but these schools wont admit me.

I also made the mistake of not applying to some safrer school. In fact cmu was the lowest ranked schoold that i applied to. Let's pray I can get into cmu.

I'll also pray for u, that u get good new from McCombs.

Amit,

Thanks. Good luck with CMU.
One of my close friends was saying the same thing about why I didn't apply to safer schools outside the top-20. But to me, the investment of time and effort demands that I apply to the best possible schools that I can get into for my profile.

CMU is a very good school and I felt a connection after visiting the school last fall. Hope I get of the WL.

Prayers for your admit as well.

Hey.

Thanks for your good wishes.

One question. As you know I'm planning on plan B too and giving a hard look to part-time programs. I know from another post that you mentioned that it is not ideal for career switchers, since they've got to do summer internship. But if the part-time curriculum will take about 3 years to complete, and if the schools allows you to interview for summer internships even as a part-time student, what is wrong with doing mba part-time. I agree it is not ideal, but what can one do if he's not getting admission to full time? I mean I've been in IT for more than 7 years and now i realize i want to switch to finance - what other options do i have. I'm already in my early thirties, and I'm only gonna grow older hereon.

One thing more.

I tool felt the connection in CMU. I thought it was really cool and students know each other more as compared to other schools (such as Columbia/NYU - whose informationals I attended).

But one of my former colleagues is a graduate student ambassador at nyu. And she says that they are trained to paint nicer picture of nyu/school and said it would be true for cmu too. She had some bad things to say about nyu (in addition to the good things), but those bad things she'd only tell me - as a former colleague. If she were contacted by any other prospective students, she'll just tell him good things about nyu.

After this conversation with her, I couldnt help but think if the cmu experience (lunch with student etc) was fully staged too.

Amit,

You live close to NYC right ? Why not pay a visit to Stern and talk to the folks there to see what opportunities part-time students have ?
But I fail to understand how you can do an internship which is a full-days job along with your current IT job responsibilites.
You may also want to check out some schools like Simon(Rochester) which have pretty good reputation in Finance...I think getting addicted to rankings can be a bad thing. Although I have no idea about Finance or Wall Street gyan...I think an MBA from such schools like Simon coupled with your own demonstrated interest (e.g. doing a CFA level 1) should get you a foot in the door at most firms, except for any picky IB firms who only care for Columbia/Stern MBAs.
You may want to post your query in the GMATClub forum, where there are some Finance-knowledgeable folks.

Regarding your CMU response, you may be right. I guess it depends on who the student contact is.

Some are pretty frank about the school's negatives, while others only want to praise about the school.

But overall, I am pretty upset about this whole b-school application thing at the moment.

I mean, I had a GMAT much higher than their average, have decent acads, chose schools tailored to my interest and have pretty decent career progression. I visited the school and confirmed that it is a place where I can spend 2 very important years of my life.
I wrote every essay on my own, with whatever limited creativity I have. If this is not enough, then what is ?

Do they expect me to embellish my achievements and tell things I never did....or should I focus on doing some community service for a year just to show how well-rounded I am. Or should I take help of the zillion+ essay services to write a stellar essay with which I can hardly relate to ?

Whatever....

I had to crib about it...sorry about that ! I probably will get back to my senses soon !!

Hey.

I can feel your pain, since I'm going through same pain myself. Good gmat ( I saw people with 630/640 gmat getting admitted to cmu), wrote essays myself with the help of my brother (used 5 essay reference books), good brand name software co., some limited community service. I guess all of this is not enough.

I'm anxiously waiting for cmu result today.

amit,

I am very sorry to hear this.

But to be very honest with you, I dont think there is much hope for us to get off the WL.

Statistically speaking, last year 2folks got off the WL, out of 220 in the line. That's not very encouraging.

Having said that, no harm trying.
In my case, I did the following since I was put on WL :
- Sent a revised goals and contribution essay.
- I reported my TOEFL score, which I didn't previously.(Got a 30/30 in the writing section which I thought is worth mentioning).
- I asked my boss to send in an additional reco, based on a recent work achievement.

Despite all this, there has been no change so far in my status.

It seems they make the final calls by May-end, June. We'll see how it goes. If you need more info, send me your e-mail ID. I will be glad to assist every way I can.

I agree with your assessment. To tell you the truth, I dont even consider WL a chance to get in. To me it is a ding. Just think about it - if they WL a Indian IT guy with 740 score (from BW forum), can you imagine the competition in this category. When I went there for interview, 9 out of 22 interview candidates were desis. I think even if they being someone off the WL, it wont be a desi guy.

This was my last MBA application. I dont really know what to do or how can I improve my application now. My email id is ami75tjs at yahoo dot com. Can you please email me to discuss this.
