OK....there are some pretty good desi South Indian restaurants around Edison.
As we prefer South Indian food, we will look at that closely here.
Here is the list in my order of preference :
Vasanta Bhavan, Hamilton NJ (http://www.vasantabhavan.com/dynamicdata/map.asp)
This place serves superb South Indian vegetarian food.
We went here for the Sunday buffet lunch and the food was really awesome.
We had avial,coconut rice,beans usili,sambar,appalam,pickle,Naan, payasam.
Dosa Grill (North Brunswick,NJ) http://www.dosagrill.com/
Excellent lunch buffet ! Buffet consisted of Idli, 3 types of chutney (tomato, coconut&Onion),you can order the dosa that you want, sevai, pakoda, noodles, rice, excellent sambar, rasam, poriyal, mushroom curry, beetroot halwa, veg biryani, naan with 2 side dishes.
All for $10. Really good place. Would definitely go there again.
Hoysala, Somerset NJ (http://www.hoysalarestaurant.com/)
Good Karnataka style cuisine. They serve good Non-Veg as well.
Sunday buffet here consisted of Mushroom Palav, excellent Bisi-Bele Bath,Salad,2 types of bajji (mangalore bajji, spinach bajji), Idli, Dosa, coconut chutney, sambar, naan,2 types of sweet (rice payasam, kesari bath). The only funny thing we found was the $5 charge for "majjige" (Butter-milk). It is treated like water back home !
Malgudi, Oak tree rd (Behind Dunkin Donuts) Edison, NJ
Positive :Buffet was too good.
Negative : Wait time.
Quite different from other buffet's I have had. Buffet starts with Chat (Pani puri, Bhel puri), then Aloo tikki, then you can have Idli with 2 types of chutney and sambar. Then move on to either Rice (sambar, rasam) with poriyal OR have Naan with 2 side dishes. Dessert : Icecream and Gajar ka halwa.
Saravana Bhavan, Edison NJ 08820(Opposite Bank of america, Burger King on Wood Ave)
http://www.saravanabhavan.com/
The main reason why this does not appear on top of the list is the long wait (45 minutes to be exact per my last visit). The other negatives are the small quantity of rice served, poor response time for additional servings etc. Otherwise food is OK although far behind the high standards set by the same joint in Vadapalani, chennai were I used to visit it every afternoon (just a 3 minute walk from my office).
Dosa Express,Iselin,NJ
1170 Green St New Jersey (NJ) Phone: (732) 404 0047
They don't seem to have a site yet.
Its not a place you can go for lunch, more of a tiffin centre.
You get good Dosa (guess 2 dozen varieties!)...my favourite is the Bangalore Masala Dosa.
You also get other tiffin stuff - Idli, vada, Bisibele bath, Kesari Bath, Lassi etc.
The only problem is that they dont have a lot of parking space and it gets crowded during weekends.
Swagath Gourmet
1700 Oak Tree Road New Jersey (NJ) Phone: (732) 549 2626
In the heart of the famous Oak tree road. They serve South Indian cuisine, karnataka style to be more specific. I like the lentil soup they provide as a starter. There is no buffet but the South Indian meal is quite filling. You also get other South Indian stuff like Dosa, idli etc.
Dakshin Express Oak Tree Rd, Edison NJ 08820
(Bad experience)
Had a horrible experience here.......ordered Veg Thali. The Thali came sans papad, Rasam & dessert....papad came 10 mins later...rasam came 15 minutes later (when we were mostly done)...and I didn't even care to ask when the dessert might arrive. Place is quite congested. Heard that Biryani is good. Not sure I want to go there again.
Tanjore (on Route 1 South)
http://www.tanjorenj.com/
Very poor buffet. On one instance found hair in the food and politely left the place.
For the sake of completeness, lunch consisted of idiyappam, pongal (which was cold!),tomato chutney, coconut chutney, channa masala, rasam(cold again),sambar(very mediocre),cabbage(which were cut into huge chunks),rice, vetha kozhambu(very watery), rosagulla(very hard).
All in all, a waste of $$$ which could be better spent in the other restaurants mentioned at the top of the list.
Will update this list as and when we discover new restaurants here.
